Mother Today sat down with Country Music Star Kimberly Dawn, for an exclusive interview on what it looks like to juggle her budding music career in the limelight and 4 beautiful children. Kimberly Dawn is a country singer/ songwriter using her natural talent for storytelling and music to express an authentic message of perseverance, humility, courage, and resilience. Through original songs like “Cadillac Lovers” and “Slow Dancin’ in the Dark” – nominated for Best Country Song at the 2019 Hollywood Music in Media Awards – the Canadian-born musician shares timeless stories of real-life triumph in the never-ending struggle to find bold purpose and powerful self-love. As a mother of four, Dawn’s personal journey toward creating inner strength and balance on the road to living out her passion is one to which many women can relate, and one that she feels particularly suited to tell. “All through growing up, raising a family, and finding myself, music got me past the most difficult times. If my song gives someone else strength to get through the day, then I’ve done what I set out to do.” Dawn earned her stripes opening for Wilson Phillips in 2015, along with performances at Los Angeles’ House of Blues and celebrity red-carpet charity events. She has also featured on popular podcasts such as Stripdt Down with Ali Levine and All About You. MT: What would you say has been the biggest encouragement and example with your career to your children?
KD: I would say that my children have been able to watch me balance being a mom, along with my career. It’s important that my children know that it’s okay to have career, and family without feeling guilty for wanting both.
MT: When did you decide to become a recording artist?
KD: I became a recording artist 15 years ago.
MT: What is the current project you are working on?
KD: Currently I am getting ready to release another single entitled “The Bottle” and I am planning to release my Album this summer. I am still writing a lot because I’m always thinking about the next project.
MT: Who has been your favorite producer to work with?
KD: I would have to say Zach Abend. He produced my lasted album that is coming out later this year. He is an all round great guy and so talented.
MT: In this career as a public figure and recording artist, is it hard to balance family and work?
KD: It has been challenging at times. I think when the kids were really little it was a lot harder. Mom guilt has definitely played a part in that.
As the kids have gotten older and a little more independent it’s been easier. My husband has been great with syncing our calendars. When he’s traveling I make sure I’m home with the kids, and when he’s traveling he makes sure he’s home with the kids. We have worked hard to make sure we aren’t both traveling at the same time. It gives consistency to the kids and that’s important to both of us.
MT: How has the pandemic affected the music industry?
KD: The pandemic has affected the music industry significantly. With no concerts, venues have suffered, all the people who were planning on going on tours and everything came to a halt. It’s been heartbreaking because I’ve seen so many of my music friends affected financially.
MT: If you could collaborate with any artist who would it be?
KD: Ok so I have two people that I would love to collaborate with and actually I think the three of us could create amazing music … Dolly Parton and Garth Brooks. They are both so talented and amazing songwriters. It would be a dream collaboration for me.
MT: What is your plan for the future and music?
KD: My plan is to release my upcoming Album. Continue writing and working on getting a publishing deal. I would love to get on some tours once touring starts back up.
